Strengthening Hand Muscles

Developing fine motor skills (the small muscles in your child's hands and fingers) will help your child become more independent in their everyday activities, like feeding and dressing themselves. Strengthening these muscles will also help with activities such as drawing, painting, cutting with scissors and writing in the future.

Some ideas to help with fine motor development include:

  • Playdough (pinching, poking, squeezing)
  • Finger painting
  • Push toys
  • Using tweezers to pick up small objects
  • Making bread or baking
  • Crawling
  • Using clothes pegs
  • Threading
